About Sunsetting the SW-CMM® |
 |
| |
There are many organizations using the SW-CMM® that feel that their business is not immediately affected by the introduction of CMMI®. To account for this and include main-stream and later adopters, the sunsetting of the SW-CMM will be accomplished over time as follows:
Following the publication of CMMI V1.1 in December 2001, the SEI will not produce any updates to the SW-CMM model or training. The SEI will provide public Introduction to SW-CMM training for two years after the publication of CMMI V1.1. The SEI will not withdraw the transition partners' right to deliver the Introduction to SW-CMM beyond the two-year period to select organizations requesting on-site delivery, and new instructors may be authorized, if needed
For assessments and evaluations, the SEI has published SCAMPISM V1.1 as a replacement for CBA IPI and SCESM. The SEI will not produce any updates to the CBA IPI and SCE methods in the future. SCAMPI will then be the single appraisal method of choice.
Data from SEI-authorized assessments against the SW-CMM® will continue to be accepted and used as part of the community maturity profile reporting by the SEI, along with the data from authorized CMMI appraisals. These data will be consolidated by the SEI into the appropriate community process maturity profile.

How does CMMI support software-only and information technology (IT) organizations? |
 |
| |
Many software-only and IT organizations, and process-improvement consultants licensed by the SEI working with such organizations, have been using CMMI to improve business processes for over a year. The SEI has initiated an effort to collect interpretation issues and lessons learned from these early adopters for the benefit of the many other software-only and IT organizations that are only now beginning to adopt CMMI. As a first step, the SEI released the CMMI for Software (CMMI-SW) model in August 2002.

What are the benefits of migrating to CMMI®? |
 |
| |
Most importantly, the Integrated Model provides a single approach to multiple types of organizations that are involved in the Systems, Software or Acquisition Businesses. Benefits that some of our customers have seen are a reduction in overall appraisal/assessment efforts due to a new and better appraisal method. Other tangible benefits include but are not limited to being less than 0.5 Defects/KLOC for Software, over 70% Review Efficiency, Schedule and Effort Variances reduced by tri fold, reduced re work, improved productivity, and better team integration and organization morale - these are the same as the ones seen by implementing CMM® based improvements. Not new to companies that know and implement CMM. CMMI® is the model of choice these days, and immense improvements have been also realized by implementing concepts in the Integrated Product and Process Development (IPPD) which transforms the way businesses and teams worked earlier for the better with employee morale and satisfaction.
